Blog & Feature Article: All Aboard for Kids
My public relations writing class in the fall of 2022 had to opportunity to work with All Aboard for Kids, a summer camp in Central Iowa designed for children and teens with autism. I wrote the following pieces with the goal of helping them spread awareness of their programs and increasing camp participants and donors.
For this assignment, I wrote a blog post about how parents and caregivers can help prepare children with autism for the transition out of high school. I wrote the post from the co-founder's perspective, and this was a great exercise in writing through another voice. I also practiced researching a topic I knew little about and organizing an article in an easy-to-digest format for the everyday reader. I finally worked in a subtle promotion for the summer camp through the blog designed to provide convenient, helpful information that answers the target audience's questions.
This assignment gave me the opportunity to practice writing a feature article that could be used in a magazine or anther local publication. I wrote about the co-founder's journey to creating the camp to share about the camp itself and the importance of having these resources in our community. In writing this article, I learned about writing through storytelling and the importance of using a personal story to raise awareness about a larger issue.
